Sean is interested in the costs and benefits of sexual selection to population fitness. He is involved in several projects related to the role of sexual selection in eliminating deleterious mutations. In one project, he is measuring the extent to which deleterious mutations reduce sperm competitive ability of males in in Drosophila melanogaster. In a separate project, he is measuring whether sexual selection causes males to suffer higher levels of inbreeding depression than females. Sean is also designing a project to investigate how different modes of sexual selection (male-male competition vs. female choice) affect offspring fitness. Sean is co-advised by Dr. Aneil Agrawal.
